There's an M marking/proof on the trigger guard, and what appear to be four astericks on the barrel where it meets the receiver. While the model number is in line with what Canfield reports as WWII shotguns(40,000,-60,000), it doesn't have the military markings. Looked in two reference books and although the Stevens Model 520 was listed in both, no dates of manufacture were listed. There is no published serial number-year made tables for Stevens made guns and some records were destroyed in a fire years ago.

I inherited a Montgomery Ward’s Western Field Model 30 shotgun from my late father-in-law. I think it might have been his father’s gun because of the age, but I’m not sure. It is a 12 gauge pump with a 30 inch barrel and full choke. The serial number is 89604 B, stamped on the lower tang of the stock mount just behind the trigger guard.

The first rubber recoil pads were offered on store brand Model 520s (Sears Ranger and Wards Western Field) in 1935 and they were department store branded pads with that XOXOXOX pattern so it's very likely it is original to the shotgun. The highest number I have seen was on 20 gauge Stevens Model 311 Series H serial number E957971. The Savage branded imported doubles, over and unders or side by sides, are numbered differently. That said, since these shotguns are made for them in China they might not even bother putting them in the system. Someone who's had one for awhile will have to verify if they are or not.
